CTU’s healthcare management online degree program is designed to provide students with a well-rounded study regimen in the field of healthcare. The online Healthcare Management degree program offers instruction in the business and administrative side of the healthcare industry, including, but not limited to, patient access, revenue cycle management, project management, economics of healthcare and fundamentals of marketing and human resource management. You will also have an opportunity to study important regulations and explore how to support an organization’s compliance needs, including patient privacy and HIPAA laws, as well as changing issues in billing and insurance.

This Healthcare Management degree is offered as a general track or with a concentration in Informatics.

Program Overview

The Bachelor of Science in Healthcare Management is a 180-credit-hour program that is offered online and at the Colorado Springs campus. The program includes 51 credit hours of general education credit, 109 credit hours of core healthcare management classes, and 20 credit hours of electives to define a concentration area.

The Bachelor of Science in Healthcare Management is designed to provide students with knowledge and skills applicable to management positions in the healthcare industry as well as the application of fundamental principles and concepts of business administration to the healthcare management field.

Students will be presented with an integration of foundational knowledge in healthcare management and understanding and analysis of current issues such as reimbursement strategies; the changing legislative and regulatory environment; and the relationship of cost, quality, and access to care. Students may compare healthcare delivery models for their purposes and effectiveness, and contrast the United States with other countries; apply technology innovations and business, ethical, and legal principles to the management of healthcare organizations; and analyze various types of reimbursement received for healthcare services and the effect on the financial operations of a healthcare organization.

This program does not lead to additional licensure or certification. As such, CTU has made no determination regarding prerequisites for licensure or certification in any state or jurisdiction.

HCM419 This course focuses on the U.S. health care system and the policies that influence the provision of healthcare services and public health outcomes. Students will examine the historical and political context of health policy and the policy making process at state and federal levels. The key stakeholders in the policymaking process will be identified, and students will discuss how they can be brought together to build coalitions and partnerships to shape and influence policy making decisions. HCM425 This course examines population health from an epidemiologic and public health perspective. Concepts and methods are applied to managerial decision-making in the delivery of healthcare services to address community/population health issues. An evidence-based and data driven approach is used to explore the determinants of health and assess the health status and healthcare needs of populations. The role of healthcare organizations in the development of intervention strategies to improve quality and delivery of health services in the community is explored. HRMT215 This course examines the role and function of the Human Resource Department in the organization and provides an overview of human resource management activities covering the essential employment and managerial tasks required. HSS310 This course builds on the learner’s understanding of the principles of microeconomics to examine the importance of economics in healthcare decisions. The economic principles and market conditions impacting the healthcare industry will be discussed. Students are introduced to the various forces influencing the economics of healthcare including but not limited to competition, supply and demand, the role of healthcare providers, consumers and payers, and how public policy Influences the economy of healthcare. HSS420 The rising cost of healthcare in the United States continues to be on the forefront of many political campaigns and discussions. This course will provide an overview of global health problems and national health systems to provide the student with a perspective on how societies in developed and under-developed countries approach health and healthcare including cultural, economic and political factors. In addition to national systems, the roles played by certain global/international systems such as the Global Health Data Exchange (GHDx), World Health Organization (WHO), certain United Nations (UN) agencies and Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs), will be explored. What is a Bachelor of Science in Healthcare Management (BSHM) degree?

CTU’s Bachelor of Science in Healthcare Management (BSHM) Degree Program is designed to provide knowledge, skills, and abilities relevant for pursuing potential opportunities in the workforce. This bachelor’s degree program emphasizes the skills applicable to management positions, as well as the application of fundamental principles and concepts of business administration to the healthcare management field. Students will be presented with an integration of foundational knowledge in healthcare management and an understanding and analysis of current issues in the field.

What will I study in this BSHM degree program?

As you work to complete your BSHM, you will be immersed in courses where you may study these topics and much more: cultures, traditions, and value systems as they apply in international, multinational, and global business settings; financial statements and financial statement analysis; and building sustainable excellence in customer service.

When and where can I begin my healthcare management classes?

Courses for the BSHM start online and on our Colorado Springs campus approximately every five weeks. Completion of the CTU admissions process will depend on how quickly you complete the steps in the CTU online application process. You may complete the application process over the phone with an advisor or you may go online. Once you’ve completed the online application, you may hear from an advisor within the following 24 hours to discuss the next steps toward starting your degree program.

How many credits are required to graduate from the bachelor’s degree program?

The BSHM degree program consists of 180 credits. You may be eligible for transfer credit, which is evaluated on an individual basis. Not all credits are eligible to transfer. By completing and passing CTU Fast Track^™ exams you can receive college credit for what you already know—allowing you to complete your degree program up to 30% faster.¹

¹ The ability to reduce time in school and/or reduce tuition towards the full cost of a degree program depends on the number of CTU Fast Track^™ exams successfully passed. Fast Track program credits are non-transferable. Not all programs are eligible for possible 30% reduction in time and money. Courses eligible are subject to change. Students should not rely on potential Fast Track savings or eligibility when making an enrollment decision.
